Notes from the April 22 Dart Language Design Meeting

elvis operator / safe navigation operator Lars is fine with the idea of adding some syntactic sugar like this if it helps real users. Kasper thinks we should wait until after 1.0 to look into it since we'll need analyzer support, editor support, tests, etc.

Pub's New Constraint Solver

TL;DR: Pub now has a new constraint solver that will pick versions of packages that work with your SDK. No more "doesn't work with your SDK " errors. This should appear in your life in the next SDK build. Pub's job is to look at your dependencies and select the best versions for them.

New Quick Videos on Dart's Classes, Exceptions, and More

Goodbye InvocationMirror, Hello Invocation

TL;DR: We added a class Symbol to dart:core, renamed the class InvocationMirror to Invocation (keeping it in dart:core ), and moved Invoke.invokeOn to InstanceMirror.delegate (moving this functionality from dart:core to dart:mirrors ). Furthermore, Function.apply and InstanceMirror.invoke take a Map to represent named arguments. Finally, dart:mirror uses Symbol instead of String to represent names.

List of Last Minute M4 Breaking Changes

The M4 release saw the Core, Async, and Collection libraries stabilize. Dan Grove has compiled a list of the last minute breaking changes: The separator argument in Iterable.join defaults to "" (instead of `null`). All DateTime constants are non-abbreviated. Also changed DAYS_IN_WEEK to DAYS_PER_WEEK.

Core libraries stabilize with Dart's new M4 release

Today, we are releasing Dart SDK Milestone 4, available for immediate download. The highlights are: Core and collection libraries are now stable. There will be no more breaking changes to these libraries.1 Performance improved in both the dart2js compiler and the Dart VM. Dart Editor comes with an all-new analysis engine for faster real-time feedback.

Enum Proposal for Dart

The contents from the post: Rumor has it that people want enums in Dart. We've been looking at how to do this for a long time. We've examined all kinds of variations; the full account is, like the giant rat of Sumatra, a story the world is not yet ready to told (forgive me, Sherlock, but I couldn't resist).

Why dart2js produces faster JavaScript code from Dart

The dart2js compiler, which converts Dart to JavaScript, now produces smaller and faster code thanks to its global type inferencer. By analyzing the entire program, the compiler can eliminate bail outs and redundant checks, resulting in code that runs faster on modern JavaScript engines.

Dart News & Updates: Notes from the March 18 Dart Language Design Meeting

Lars: I like the "implements dynamic" thing. Gilad: Me too, it's like a get out of jail free card. Kasper: That means the type behaves like dynamic in all contexts? Even for is checks and checked mode checks? Gilad: If you assign something to it, it goes through normal rules.

Dart News & Updates: Irrduino: A Sprinkler System Built Using Arduino, Android, Google App Engine, Python, and Dart

Developers frequently ask me if Dart is ready for the real world. Well, of course, that depends on the application. Check out this short video in which Joe Fernandez and I not only show that Dart can be used in the real world, we also show that it can be used to take the tedium out of watering your lawn!
